Welcome To Steckmest Furniture Design

The site is divided into categories. There is some overlap so check the various groups for what you're looking for. The Cashmere rocker being my signature piece has it's own page. This rocking chair has evolved over the past twenty years or so to it's current design. The original design being first inspired by Sam Maloof.

New Work contains recent items I've built some completely new and others changes to previously done designs.

The Other Work category contains the main body of furniture I have built over time, from dining chairs to baby cradles.

The Accessories/Gifts page is a recent addition and will grow as new designs are added. Check back occasionally for new pieces. This is a great place to find that special gift.

Ordering will show you prices and shipping information.

Retail lists The galleries and shops showing my work.

All the work here is truly handmade, not that everything is made with hand tools, although I did do that at one time. By handmade I mean the work is designed and built from start to finish by one person in a small shop without the aid of computer controlled machinery, laser cutting and so forth. It's not manufactured, which is not necessarily a bad thing it's just that this work is different.

David Pye in his book "The Nature and Art of Workmanship" uses the term "The workmanship of risk" differentiating handmade from manufactured. During the building process there are many things that can go wrong. As a craftsman there is constant risk. Knowledge of materials, experience with tools and equipment, and patience, keep things on track. Manufactured work on the other hand is an assembly line process from start to finish.

I take great care in wood selection.  Select quality wood is chosen and matched both for color and grain pattern. Manufactured furniture is almost always stained  to "blend" wood together rather than matching wood of similar color and grain characteristics.

I use joinery best suited to it's application, always thinking in terms of longevity rather than expedience.

Steckmest Furniture Design builds high quality handcrafted rocking chairs. The "Cashmere" rocker is in both construction and comfort the best in the contemporary crafts market.
